Tea absorbs odors and moisture very quickly. A valuable batch of tea can lose its aroma in just a few weeks if stored improperly.
Four Things to Avoid
Avoid moisture: always seal the bag or container after taking out tea, do not use a wet spoon.
Avoid sunlight: light fades the aroma, so store in an opaque container, in a dark place.
Avoid foreign odors: do not store near spices, coffee, or soap.
Avoid heat: do not place near the stove or in direct sunlight.
Specifically for Pu-erh Tea Cakes
Tea cakes need to breathe. Keep the original wrapper, place in a paper box or wooden crate in a well-ventilated area with about 60–70% humidity. The better it's stored, the mellower the tea becomes.
How Long to Use
Green tea and young white tea should be consumed within 12–18 months to preserve their fresh aroma.
Black tea keeps well for 2–3 years. Pu-erh and pressed white tea become more valuable with age, provided they are stored correctly.
